King of Persia from 485 BC when he succeeded
his father Darius and continued the Persian
invasion of Greece. In 480, at the head of an
army of some 400,000 men and supported by a
fleet of 800 ships, he crossed the Hellespont
strait (now the Dardanelles) over a bridge of
boats. He defeated the Greek fleet at
Artemisium and captured and burned Athens,
but Themistocles retaliated by annihilating
the Persian fleet at Salamis and Xerxes was
forced to retreat. He spent his later years
working on a grandiose extension of the
capital Persepolis and was eventually
murdered in a court intrigue.
